IDEAS IN THE MAKING : DRAWING STRUCTURE

2011, Trinity Contemporary, London

I call the sculptural works in this exhibition "drawings" to introduce the idea that the encounter can be different to that of looking at an object, that it can be one where we step into the space of the work and become part of it. Brancusi said  "...it is impossible for anyone to express anything essentially real by imitating its exterior surface."  I like to look beneath the surface of things, to be with things and to be sensitive to the materiality of things that surround us.
With the series  Boxes for thinking about opening the viewer is confronted by an object and asked to imagine the space inside, we presume to know the internal space from relating physically to the external form, but we really only imagine it.
